WHY nEUROFEEDBACK BRAIN TRAINING iS a pATH tHAT hELPS?

Because the brain, like the body, needs training, fine-tuning, so it can function at its best.

Mental health symptoms can reflect a brain not working properly.  Taking a holistic approach that includes neurofeedback is the key for long-term cognitive health and emotional wellbeing.

FAQs

Are there side effects?

Neurofeedback is generally considered a safe method of brain training, but the potential for side effects can vary depending on the type of neurofeedback system used: protocol (linear) or Dynamical NeurOptimal (non-linear).

Protocol or Linear Neurofeedback: In this traditional form of neurofeedback, side effects are more common but usually mild. They may include temporary feelings of agitation, sleepiness, or headaches. This method requires a brain map to set training protocols, and the accuracy of these protocols is crucial. Misadjustment of frequencies can lead to these side effects. However, when conducted under the guidance of a skilled clinician, these effects are typically short-lived and not severe.

Dynamical NeurOptimal Neurofeedback: Being a more advanced, non-linear form of neurofeedback, Dynamical NeurOptimal systems are known for having fewer side effects. This is because they don't require setting specific protocols based on a brain map. Instead, the system provides real-time feedback to the brain, allowing it to self-regulate. Side effects are rare in this method and, if they occur, are generally minor and temporary, such as transient headaches or fatigue.

It's important to note that the presence and severity of side effects in both systems can also be influenced by individual differences, such as a person's overall health and brain sensitivity.

How long before you see results from NeurOptimal neurofeedback?

The number of sessions required before noticing changes with NeurOptimal neurofeedback can vary depending on the individual and their specific goals or issues. Generally, users may start to observe subtle changes within the first few sessions. These initial changes can be in the form of improved sleep quality, increased feelings of calm, or a subtle shift in response to stressful situations.

For more significant and lasting changes, a series of sessions is typically recommended. The standard recommendation is around 20-40 sessions, spread out over a period of two to three months. This duration allows the brain to adapt and form new, healthier patterns of activity. It's important to remember that each person's experience is unique, and some may require more or fewer sessions to achieve their desired results.

Throughout the process, it's encouraged to monitor your progress and discuss any changes or adjustments with your neurofeedback trainer. They can provide guidance and adjust the training as needed based on your individual response to the sessions.

Can I be on medication and do neurofeedback?

Yes, you can participate in neurofeedback sessions while on medication. Neurofeedback training focuses on brainwave optimization and is not known to interfere with medications. In fact, many clients start neurofeedback while taking medications for various conditions, such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, or sleep disorders.

However, it's important to maintain open communication with both your neurofeedback trainer and healthcare provider. As you progress with neurofeedback training, you may experience changes in your condition that could warrant a re-evaluation of your medication by your healthcare provider. Some individuals find that their need for certain medications decreases as they continue with neurofeedback, but any changes to medication should only be made under the guidance of your healthcare provider.

Remember, neurofeedback is a complementary approach and is not meant to replace any current medical treatments or medications without professional medical advice.

For specific advice regarding your situation and to explore how neurofeedback can complement your current treatment plan, it's best to consult with both your healthcare provider and one of our qualified neurofeedback trainer. They can provide personalized guidance based on your individual health needs and circumstances.

Do I need a brain map before starting?

Whether you need a brain map (QEEG) before starting neurofeedback depends on the type of neurofeedback system being used: protocol (linear) or Dynamical NeurOptimal (non-linear).

Protocol or Linear Neurofeedback: For this traditional form of neurofeedback, a brain map or QEEG is typically required before starting. The QEEG helps in assessing your brain's electrical activity and identifying any dysregulations. This information is crucial as it guides the clinician in setting specific protocols to target your brain's unique patterns. The brain map serves as a reference point, helping to tailor the neurofeedback sessions to your individual needs.

Dynamical NeurOptimal Neurofeedback: With the Dynamical NeurOptimal system, a pre-session brain map or QEEG is not necessary. This advanced form of neurofeedback does not rely on predetermined protocols based on brain mapping. Instead, it utilizes a real-time, dynamic approach, allowing your brain to use the feedback it receives during each session to self-regulate and optimize its function. This system is designed to respond to your brain's natural functioning, adapting to its needs in the moment without the need for pre-session diagnostics.

Do the results from neurofeedback last?

The longevity of results from neurofeedback varies depending on several factors, including the individual's age, the number of sessions, and the type of neurofeedback system used. However, it is generally observed that the results from neurofeedback can be long-lasting.

Longevity in Children: Research and clinical observations suggest that the results of neurofeedback in children tend to be more enduring compared to adults. This is possibly because a child's brain is still developing and more plastic, meaning it's more adaptable and capable of forming new neural pathways. Therefore, when children undergo neurofeedback, the new brain patterns they develop are more likely to integrate into their brain's architecture, making the changes more stable and long-lasting.

Longevity in Adults: While adults can also experience lasting benefits from neurofeedback, their results might not be as enduring as those seen in children. This is because adult brains have less neuroplasticity compared to younger brains. However, adults can still achieve significant and sustained improvements, especially with consistent and adequate training.

Maintenance Sessions: For both children and adults, occasional 'tune-up' sessions might be recommended to maintain the benefits. These sessions can help reinforce the new neural pathways, especially in response to new stressors or life changes.

Type of Neurofeedback System: The type of neurofeedback system can also influence the duration of the results. Systems like Dynamical NeurOptimal are designed to work with the brain's natural learning processes, which might contribute to more sustainable changes.

Does neurofeedback help anxiety?

Yes, there are a number of clinical studies that show neurofeedback to be effective in reducing symptoms of anxiety. It is considered a viable option for individuals looking for non-invasive and drug-free intervention. However, effectiveness can vary from person to person.  It is brain training rather than a treatment.  Like many symptoms of brain dysregulation, anxiety is best approached from a multi-pronged approach that includes exercise, a healthy diet and psychotherapy.

Is neurofeedback safe for everyone with anxiety?

Neurofeedback is considered safe for most people, including children and adults. It is non-invasive and generally has few to no side effects. However, it's important to undergo a thorough assessment by a qualified practitioner to ensure it's the right option for you, especially if you have underlying health conditions or are taking medication.
